Connection of personally-owned desktop computers to the campus network

Personally-owned desktop computers in University offices may be connected to the campus network subject to the following conditions:

  • The computer must be for the use of a student in connection with their studies. (Staff who need to use a computer for their employment should be supplied with suitable University-owned and managed computing facilities.)
  • The person who owns the computer must be entitled to use the Roaming Network and accept and comply with its terms and conditions of use.
  • The school or unit providing the office must agree to and sponsor the networked use of the computer in the office.

IT Services advises that the sponsoring school or unit needs to:

  1. Give permission for the student to bring in the computer
  2. Clarify with the student that the workstation is to be used only for their studies
  3. Clarify with the student the insurance position
  4. Ask their unit Health and Safety Adviser to assess any health implications or requirements - for example, if the computer needs to be PAT tested for electrical safety or has to be moved by someone with manual handling training.
  5. Make arrangments for any consequent testing, etc.

Apart from making sure the network point is working, IT Services support for personally-owned devices is limited but please see our help page for details of the assistance that's available.
