Doctoral School BBQ

Thursday 26th May (15.30 - 18.00) - East Slope Bar

The Doctoral School is hosting a free summer BBQ for doctoral researchers and research staff.  This is an excellent opportunity to meet other researchers from across campus!

This year, the BBQ will be taking place on Thursday 26th May (15:30 - 18.00) in East Slope Bar, and all researchers who register in advance will receive vouchers for food from the barbeque and for one drink up to the value of £3.50.

There will be a range of food available for meat-eaters, vegetarians and vegans, please see the menu for more details.

Over 250 researchers attended the BBQ last year and place are going quickly, so be sure to book your place early so that you don't miss out!

 

Take 5: Twitter for Researchers (online course)

Monday 23rd May - Friday 27th May, Dr Anne Hole (Learning Technologist)

This 'Take 5' online bitesize course offers researchers at the ÄûÃÊÊÓƵ the opportunity to gain an insight into Twitter. From tweeting and following to hashtags and Twitter chats, this course will give you a comprehensive introduction.

You will set up your own account and learn all the ins and outs of Twitter as well as ways in which you can establish and develop your personal learning network.

and when the course is due to start you'll receive an e-mail with details of how to access the course online. Working through in bitesize pieces, for the duration of the course you'll receive an e-mail each day, alerting you when the next section of the course becomes available.

 

Social Media for Academics

Monday 23rd May (13.00 - 16.30) - Pevensey 1, 2A1. Dr Allan Debelle (Research Fellow - School of Life Sciences), Dr Katy Petherick (Public Engagement Co-ordinator, School of Life Sciences) + expert guest speakers

Social media is an integral part of society and is increasingly used to disseminate research findings, and even carry out research. Social media offers opportunities for researchers to connect with the public, other researchers and potential funding bodies, promoting discussions and enhancing the reach of research.

In this half day interactive workshop, participants will explore the range of motivations and benefits for using Twitter to promote academic research and engage the public.

Through group activities, participants will test their Twitter skills, learning the most effective uses of Twitter. Talks from members of the ÄûÃÊÊÓƵ who are experts in using social media will provide participants with ideas and solutions to their own social media questions.

Following this workshops participants will:

  • Have knowledge of what constitutes ‘social media’ and the stakeholders that researchers might engage with.
  • Have explored the range of motivations and benefits of social media from different perspectives.
  • Be confident in the use of twitter to promote research and engage people.
  • Be able to plan effective tweets for a range of public audiences.
  • Know how to evaluate and demonstrate the success and impact of a social media interaction.
  • Be aware of the local resources and opportunities available to support Sussex researchers online.
