Research culture
We are building a kind, collaborative and open research community, because a supportive environment makes exceptional research possible
We are continuously striving to ensure that our Research Culture at Sussex is the best it can be. Our Research Culture Enabling Plan specifies four priority areas, which were identified through consultation with our research community.
Our aim is to share and celebrate best practice, while working to address gaps through institutional support and investment. We have been able to develop and fund many large and small projects, responding to local challenges within our priority areas.
Our work is governed by the Research Culture Steering Group (see below) and coordinated by the Research Culture Team, supported by the Research Initiatives team and others across the campus.

- Research Culture Fund 2024-2025
-
In place of a Research Culture Open Call in 2024-25, Research England Enhancing Research Culture funding has been distributed with two strategic priorities in mind:
- Consolidating work begun in our Enabling Plan priority areas to ensure a strong and sustainable legacy from investment (as we approach the end of this Research England block grant)
- Enabling our four Sussex Faculties to build their own Research Culture(s) through funding (and support from the Research Culture Team). This funding will be distributed across a range of activities by Faculty Research Committees (please speak to your Faculty’s Senior Research Manager for more information).
- Research Culture Steering Group
-
The Research Culture Steering Group provides guidance and direction to the Research Culture Programme and has oversight of all activity under the Research Culture portfolio. The Steering Group supports the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Research and Innovation in determining the use of external funding allocations awarded to the University to develop our Research Culture.
The Steering Group represents academic and professional services expertise across the Research Culture agenda (collegiality and collaboration; career development; equality, diversity and inclusion; research recognition; open research; impact capability building; research integrity, etc.).
