Applications to the AWERB
All research involving animals requires review by the Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body (AWERB). Applications should not be submitted via Sussex Direct. The AWERB (Animal Welfare and Ethical Review Body) and its sub-committee, the ARG (Applications Review Group) review two types of research project:
1. ASPA study applications
Applications that fall under the [1] - 'ASPA' applications
The University has significant legal responsibilities under the terms of its Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 Home Office Establishment Licence and has procedures and processes in place to help ensure these responsibilities are met.
2. Non-ASPA Study Applications
These are applications for all other research activities involving animals (but not under A(SP)A legislation) which are atypical or unregulated – 'Non-ASPA' applications
Whilst this type of research does not require Home Office authorisation, the University has a requirement that it is also considered and approved by the AWERB [2].
Non-Animal Special Procedures Act (ASPA) Standard Operaing Procedures (October 2020)
For advice on whether your research requires ethical approval from the AWERB or to submit applications for review, please contact the Secretary to the AWERB by emailing awerb@sussex.ac.uk
Alternatively, please work through and submit the Pre-Application Non-ASPA Form to the above AWERB email address.
