Introduction

The ÄûÃÊÊÓƵ holds a major archive relating to the New Statesman, one of the country’s leading journals of political and literary analysis since 1913. Spanning the years 1944 to 1988, the Archive records in minute detail the magazine’s business affairs, its conduct with politicians and thinkers of the day, and its correspondence with contributors. Reflecting a volatile era in which the left-leaning publication faced the ideological challenges of the H-bomb, the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia and Mao’s actions in China against the Kuomintang, the New Statesman Archive is a valuable resource for scholars of twentieth-century history, politics, journalism and literature.
