Charles Madge
Introduction
Best known as one of the founders of Mass-Observation, Charles Madge
(1912–96) also had a parallel career as an acclaimed poet, finding
recognition alongside fellow left-wing literary figures in the 1930s.
The Charles Madge Archive at Sussex contains material useful for scholars
of either literature or sociology, and Madge’s links to key figures
of twentieth-century thought in the arts and social sciences (including
TS Eliot, Kathleen Raine and JM Keynes) mean that his papers illuminate
activity across a range of disciplines.
