Collection Description

The World Parliament Association Archive contains official files of federalist pressure groups the Parliamentary Group for World Government and the World Association of Parliamentarians for World Government. These were maintained by Gilbert McAllister as Hon. Director of the Parliamentary Association and as secretary-general and Chairman of the Executive of the World Association. They include minutes, reports, correspondence, accounts and balance-sheets, photographs, and a small quantity of printed pieces. The Parliamentary Group for World Government was founded in 1945 by Henry Usborne MP and sought to introduce federalist thinking into the practical business of national politics. The Group’s meetings led to the establishment of the World Association of Parliamentarians for World Government, later renamed the World Parliament Association. This association co-ordinated activities of various like-minded national federalist groups within Europe and beyond. During this period a number of prominent public men and women lent support to the Parliamentary Group and the World Association. Among the most influential and active in Britain were Earl Attlee, Lord Beveridge, Sir James Pitman MP and, most continuously and strenuously, the Rt Hon. Clement Davies MP and Gilbert McAllister. The collection was given to the ÄûÃÊÊÓƵ in April 1977 by Mrs Catherine McAllister.
