Collection Description

The ÄûÃÊÊÓƵ holds a page of autograph notes from the musical score of Initium, an 18-minute orchestral work by Carlos Antonio de Padua Chávez y Ramírez (1899–1978). Chávez gained recognition as one of the three major Latin American composers of the twentieth century. Initium was commissioned by the Witan Club of Akron, Ohio, to celebrate the opening of a performing arts hall. Professor Donald Mitchell donated the page to the ÄûÃÊÊÓƵ in 1972; the complete manuscript was given to the University of Akron for permanent display.
