Doctoral researchers shortlisted for Political Studies Association (PSA) 'Total Exposure' initiative
Congratulations and good luck to School of Law, Politics and Sociology doctoral researchers Jess Garland, Rebecca Partos, Sam Power and Jake Watts whose pitch ‘How to build a party’ has been shortlisted for the Grand Pitching Event at The Royal Society of Arts (RSA) in London on 28th January 2016.
Total Exposure is a new initiative from the designed to bring international broadcasters and political scientists together in order to create TV and radio programmes that underline why the study of politics matters.
At the Grand Pitching Event in January Jess, Rebecca, Sam and Jake will be filmed while they present their pitch to a panel of international broadcast commissioners including the BBC, ITV, Sky and Channel 4.
With the exception of only one other, the Sussex doctoral researchers were the only PhD students to get through to the final stage.
Doctoral researcher curates exhibit at National Portrait Gallery
Congratulations to School of History, Art History and Philosophy doctoral researcher Lizzie Heath, who has put together an exhibit on George Scharf at the as part of her Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC) Collaborative Doctoral Project.
The exhibition runs until 20th March 2016.
Update on 2015-16 PGR Reps
Following on from our article in the November issue of Doctoral Connections, we’re pleased to announce that further doctoral researchers have now been confirmed as Student Reps for the forthcoming academic year.

The Student Rep scheme is co-run by the ÄûÃÊÊÓƵ and the . Student Reps provide an essential link between Students, the Union and the University. PGR Student Reps are doctoral students, elected by fellow students or self-nominated, to represent the views and interests of doctoral researchers in their subject.
Reps find out about issues impacting on students’ studies and experience. They may raise these informally with individual members of staff or more formally at department, school, and university level committees in order to effect positive change.

Autumn Researcher-Led Initiative (RLI) Awards
We are delighted to announce that nine researcher-led initiatives have been awarded funding following the Autumn call for applications.

Doctoral researchers invited to illuminate kindness through their research
As featured in a recent Sussex news item, on World Kindness Day (13th November) doctoral researchers at Sussex were invited to apply for an award to support them in giving a conference presentation on research that is relevant to the topic of kindness. Applications are invited for funding of up to £1,000 to support the costs of presenting the research at a national or international conference.
Successful applicants will be asked to write a short blog about their work and also to contribute to a kindness symposium for a non-specialist audience, timed to coincide with next year’s World Kindness Day (13 November 2016).
The deadline for applications is 31st January 2016.
Student-Led Teaching Award - now open for nominations
The Student-Led Teaching Awards are now open for nominations. The awards are a partnership between the University and the , and they are your opportunity to say “thank you” to staff who have made a difference to your experience of teaching and learning at Sussex.
Categories of award include:
- Outstanding or Innovative Postgraduate Teaching
- Outstanding or Innovative Assessment and Feedback
- Outstanding Support for the Learning Experience of Students
- Outstanding Professional Services Support for the Learning Experience of Students

British Library Doctoral Student Open Days 2016
The British Library have announced a series of , taking place in January and February 2016.
These Open Days are a chance for doctoral researchers to discover the British Library’s unique research materials. They are designed to explain the practicalities of using the Library and its services, and to help you navigate the physical and online collections. You will also hear from expert staff and have the opportunity to meet other researchers in all disciplines. Places cost £5.00 including lunch.

Taking place on 1st March 2016, the organisers of the Rising Powers Young Researchers Conference would like to invite you to submit completed papers or substantial abstracts (4-7 pages) on the broad topic of Emerging Trends Within and Roles of Rising Powers in Global Development.
