Chemistry for Life Scientists
Module code: F1706
Level 4
15 credits in spring semester
Teaching method: Lecture, Workshop, Laboratory
Assessment modes: Multiple choice questions, Coursework
This module provides you with the chemical and molecular basis for the study and understanding of biological systems.
You’ll gain knowledge of key chemical principles for molecular systems in the biosciences, including:
- amino acids
- peptides
- small molecules
- cell membranes.
You’ll also learn the role of kinetics, thermodynamics and spectroscopy in modulating the behaviour of biomolecules.
Finall, you’ll develop key experimental skills for the analysis, synthesis and purification of biologically relevant compounds.
Module learning outcomes
- Demonstrate an understanding of the structure, function and bonding of organic compounds and biomolecules, including nomenclature and stereochemistry, and have a general understanding of the acid and base properties of organic molecules and pKa.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the applications of physical chemistry to biological systems
- Demonstrate an understanding of how chemical reactions and techniques can be applied to biological processes
- Demonstrate an awareness of chemistry laboratory skills relevant to biological systems.
