Analysing Media, Film and Music
Module P5044
Module details for 2025/26.
15 credits
FHEQ Level 3 (sub-degree)
Module Outline
This module introduces ways to examine and analyse media, film and music. It is centred around their everyday-ness and you will consider how your encounters and engagement are sometimes deliberate, often accidental and occasionally somewhere between. You will explore a range of media, film and music phenomena – such as big-budget cinema events, viral social media posts, music festivals or the playlist at your local supermarket – to hone your textual analysis skills and develop a toolkit to critically engage as much with what is ‘centre stage’ as what lurks in the background.
Module learning outcomes
Understand basic methods for the analysis of media, film and music texts/practices/phenomena and apply them in constructing coherent critical analysis.
Use appropriate technical language and concepts to discuss media, film and music – explain the impact of their presence/absence in specific texts/practices/phenomena.
Implement a range of strategies for managing time effectively and developing an active, independent approach to learning
