Module Outline

Building on the learning from the autumn term iteration of this module (Academic Communication for Engineering 1), ZJSU students will develop relevant L4 and L5 critical reading and research skills to enable selection, understanding and synthesis of academic source material to support the composition of subject specific genres (reports). They will learn to locate and paraphrase relevant methods from documented engineering experiments, while discussing their implications on their own experimental designs and outcomes. Teaching these synthesis skills will also encompass learning how to cite sources, according to Engineering referencing styles, while becoming aware of UoS’ principles of academic integrity.

Framed around familiar degree topics, students will analyse and produce spoken genres (presentations) that reflect the specific communicative styles required in their subject area, encouraging transfer of skills to similar assessment modes undertaken in engineering-based modules.

Module learning outcomes

Identify the key ideas, and purposes of relevant Engineering sources to support the communication of students’ own written texts and genres.

Interpret, analyse and produce oral discourse and genres typically found in academic Engineering and professional environments.

Develop individualised approaches to textual analysis and acquisition of subject specific language to support one’s own autonomous approach to future learning.
